Gastroenterology
Solvay Healthcare Ltd has been heavily involved in the gastroenterology therapy area since the launch of lactulose for the treatment of constipation, in the 1960s. This was followed in 1978 by the launch of Colofac for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome, and in 1985, by the launch of Creon® for patients with cystic fibrosis. In more recent times, Solvay has expanded its gastroenterology portfolio by successfully bringing line extensions of these popular products to the market, including Creon 40000 in 2002. The company continues to focus on gastroenterology, and further product launches are anticipated in the near future.

Neuroscience
Parkinson's Disease is the most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's disease. There are estimated to be at least 120,000 sufferers in the United Kingdom alone. Including their friends and relatives, this means approximately 1 million people are directly or indirectly affected by Parkinson's.
Parkinson's Disease is not just a disorder affecting patients' movement - it is a very complex condition affecting every part of a person's daily life.
In January 2005, Solvay Pharmaceuticals acquired Neopharma AB, a company based in Uppsala, Sweden and added Duodopa®, an important new therapy for people suffering from advanced Parkinson's Disease, to its product portfolio which will be available in the second quarter of 2006.
Duodopa® is a treatment based on continuous dopaminergic stimulation by means of a formulation of well-known tried and tested substances, levodopa and carbidopa, dispersed as a viscous gel. Using a specially designed patient-operated portable pump, the drug is continuously delivered via a tube directly into the duodenum.
